In a scandal that has rocked Odisha’s law enforcement community, a police officer in Bhubaneswar has been arrested on charges of rape, sexual exploitation, and deception following a complaint from a female colleague.
The accused, Roshan Acharya alias Toshabanta, who was recently promoted to In-Charge Inspector from Sub-Inspector, allegedly lured the victim with marriage promises over nearly eight years before betraying her trust.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Mahila Police Station after the complainant, a Sub-Inspector stationed at the same police outpost where Acharya worked, filed a formal FIR.
According to her statement, Acharya exploited her emotionally and physically for 8 years, repeatedly assaulting her under the false pretext of marriage.
The incident, which unfolded within the confines of a Bhubaneswar police station, has ignited a firestorm of criticism regarding ethical lapses and internal safety for women in the force. Acharya’s promotion just months ago has amplified the embarrassment for the department, with insiders calling it a “stain on the uniform.”
Commissionerate Police confirmed the swift action, emphasising that the case is under rapid investigation to ensure justice. The accused has been forwarded to court and sent to judicial custody after his bail petition was rejected.
Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner S Devadatta Singh has directed a thorough probe into the allegations. “If the charges are proven true, the accused will face the harshest penalties. This is unacceptable and undermines our commitment to protecting all, especially women officers,” Singh stated. He reiterated that no one is above the law, regardless of rank.
