‘Crores of “Dalits” Watching’: Rahul Gandhi Meets Family of Haryana IPS Officer Y Puran Kumar, Urges Fair Probe

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met the family of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar in Chandigarh, days after the officer’s alleged death by suicide at his Haryana residence. The incident has triggered nationwide concern over alleged bias and workplace harassment within the bureaucracy and police.

Gandhi Calls for Immediate Action

After meeting the bereaved family, Rahul Gandhi appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to “act now” and ensure a fair and transparent investigation.

“This is not just about one officer’s family but about justice and equality for all,” Gandhi said.

He also emphasized that the case has deeply affected communities across India, adding that the message being sent is that no matter how capable or successful someone is, they must be treated with fairness and dignity.

He said the incident sent a “wrong message to Dalits that no matter how successful you are, if you are Dalit, you can be crushed”. He also said that the incident was not just about the respect of the IPS officer’s family, but of all Dalits.

Family Seeks Justice

Officer Y Puran Kumar died on October 7, reportedly by a self-inflicted gunshot. His wife, Amneet Puran Kumar, an IAS officer, filed a formal complaint citing caste-based discrimination and workplace harassment.

According to the family, an eight-page note left behind by the officer named several senior officials, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya. The note reportedly described incidents of “mental harassment” and “public humiliation.”

Amneet has requested an FIR under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, demanding accountability and due process.

Investigation and Postmortem Dispute

The officer’s postmortem has been delayed, as the family has refused to grant consent. They also alleged they were not informed before the body was moved from Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, to PGIMER Chandigarh.

Sources said a misunderstanding occurred when the family’s request to view the body was mistaken as consent for postmortem. Later, Chandigarh Police DGP Sagar Preet Hooda acknowledged the communication lapse and promised greater transparency in the process.

Call for Accountability

Rahul Gandhi reiterated that the issue is not limited to one individual but highlights a deeper problem within administrative systems.

“My message as LoP to PM Modi and the Haryana Chief Minister is fulfil commitment to daughters of IPS Puran Kumar, let his funeral take place,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Rahul Gandhi also backed this claim, alleging systematic discrimination against the Haryana IPS officer to damage his career.

“This is not just a matter of one family. There are crores of Dalit brothers and sisters in the country, and they are getting the wrong message. The message that no matter how successful, intelligent, or capable you are, if you are a Dalit, you can be suppressed and thrown out. This is not acceptable for us,” Rahul Gandhi said.

He urged authorities to ensure that justice is delivered promptly and sensitively.

“Every citizen deserves respect, fairness, and a workplace free from discrimination. This is about restoring trust,” Gandhi said.

What’s Next

The Haryana government has promised a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations. The family has called for the inclusion of all relevant sections under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and officials have assured that the investigation will be carried out transparently.
