Cuttack Durga Puja clashes

What began as a vibrant Durga Puja idol immersion procession in the historic heart of Cuttack spiralled into a night of fury, leaving over 20 people injured, shops in flames, and an ancient city under lockdown.

As the dust settles on the violence that erupted late Friday, authorities have clamped down with a 36-hour curfew and a sweeping 24-hour internet suspension, all while pleading with residents to verify facts before fueling the flames of discord online.

The unrest ignited around 1:30 a.m. on October 5 near Haathi Pokhari in the sensitive Dargah Bazaar area, a bustling Muslim-majority neighbourhood known for its interfaith fabric. Revellers carrying the goddess Durga’s idol toward the Kathajodi River for immersion were met with objections from locals over the blaring music that pierced the quiet night. What started as heated words quickly escalated into chaos: stones and glass bottles rained down from rooftops, shattering the festive mood and drawing blood. Among the wounded were at least eight police officers, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, who was hit during the melee. By dawn, the skirmishes had spread like wildfire. Rioters torched shops and vehicles in retaliation, prompting fire crews to battle blazes at eight to ten spots near Gouri Shankar Park.

Videos circulating before the digital blackout showed plumes of smoke rising over narrow lanes, with police in riot gear forming human barriers amid cries and sirens.

In a bid to douse the embers of rumour-mongering, the Odisha government swiftly imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 across the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, Cuttack Development Authority, and the surrounding area. From 7 p.m. on October 5 to 7 p.m. on October 6, internet and social media access—including WhatsApp, Facebook, and X—was severed to stem the tide of unverified videos and inflammatory posts that could reignite tensions.

Essential services like hospitals and milk distribution were exempted, but the city wore a ghost-town pallor, its silver filigree shops shuttered and streets patrolled by flag marches of heavily armed forces.

At the epicentre of the response is the Odisha Police, who on Sunday issued a stark advisory via X: “Verify before sharing: Don’t let rumours turn harmony into hate,” the post warned, vowing “strict legal action” against those peddling falsehoods that could “exacerbate unrest.”

As Monday’s bandh deadline approaches, Cuttack simmers under a fragile peace. Early reports suggest no fresh violence overnight, with tight security blanketing hotspots.

But the scars run deep in this silver city, where Durga Puja’s triumph over evil was meant to unite, not divide. Yet, as the internet flickers back online, the true test will be whether Cuttack’s resilient spirit—or its social feeds—prevails.

Commissionerate Police : Public Advisory 🚨

We urge citizens to stay vigilant and not fall prey to fake videos and malicious rumours circulating on social media regarding the alleged death of a person following a recent clash between groups in Cuttack city.
