Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 126th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, urged citizens to adopt ‘Vocal for Local’ as their shopping mantra ahead of Diwali.
He said that becoming self-reliant is essential for building a self-reliant India.
“Take a resolution that you will buy only what is produced in the country. You will take home only what is made by the people of the country,” he said, encouraging people to prefer Indian-made goods.
Tributes to Bhagat Singh and Lata Mangeshkar
Modi paid tribute to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, calling him an inspiration for the nation’s youth. He recalled Bhagat Singh’s letter to the British before his execution, where he asked to be treated as a prisoner of war.
He also remembered legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on her birth anniversary, saying her songs “stir human emotions” and that her patriotic music inspired generations. Modi recalled their personal bond, mentioning that she would send him a Rakhi every year.
Recognition for Navy Officers and Chhath Puja Push
The Prime Minister introduced listeners to two Indian Navy officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna and Lieutenant Commander Roopa, who participated in the Navika Sagar Parikrama, praising their courage and determination.
He also announced that the government is working to have Chhath Puja included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. “When Chhath Puja is included, people around the world will be able to experience its grandeur and divinity,” he said.
Call to Buy Khadi on October 2
Modi urged people to buy Khadi products on Gandhi Jayanti, saying Khadi has regained popularity over the past 11 years. He asked citizens to share their purchases online with the hashtag #VocalforLocal.
He highlighted examples of innovative ventures in India’s handloom and handicraft sector, including Yaazh Naturals in Tamil Nadu and Johargram in Jharkhand, which have combined tradition with innovation and created local employment.
100 Years of RSS
Marking the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi praised its volunteers for a century of selfless service, discipline, and commitment to the principle of ‘Nation First.’ He said RSS volunteers are often among the first responders during natural disasters.
“This journey of a century is inspiring. The spirit of sacrifice and service is the true strength of the Sangh,” he said, extending his best wishes to all RSS volunteers.
