A massive stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s campaign rally on Saturday left at least 36 people dead, including women and children, and dozens more injured.

The rally, held at a venue with a capacity of 10,000, saw an overwhelming turnout of nearly 50,000 supporters, triggering panic and collapse within the crowd.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay was forced to halt his speech as fainting spells and crowd surges escalated. He appealed for calm and urged supporters to clear paths for ambulances. A nine-year-old girl went missing during the chaos, prompting a public plea from Vijay and further panic among attendees.

Chief Minister MK Stalin called the incident “worrying” and directed ministers and officials to provide emergency aid. Police resorted to baton charges to disperse the crowd, while water bottles and medical teams were rushed in to assist the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, calling the incident “deeply saddening” and extended prayers for the victims and their families.

The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also expressed deep grief over the tragic loss of lives. He posted on X:

Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede at Karur, Tamil Nadu. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying to Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath to grant peace to the departed souls, speedy recovery to the injured, and strength to all those affected by this tragedy.

The rally was part of Vijay’s statewide campaign ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Despite the tragedy, order was eventually restored and the event concluded.
