Bhubaneswar: Rain lashed some parts of Odisha as Cyclone Yaas moves closer to the coast. Following this, the State government have stepped up efforts to evacuate low-lying and vulnerable areas.
While the evacuation process in several vulnerable districts is underway, the Special Relief Commissioner has assured that the evacuation will be completed by Tuesday evening as the eye of Cyclone Yaas is expected to pass by Dhamra-Chandipur tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, at least 10-40, 000 people have been evacuated by today.
The SRC, while addressing a press meet also said that the wind speed is expected to increase today evening onwards.
The SRC also asked for the locals’ support as people continued to avoid evacuation fearing contraction of coronavirus at shelter centres.
The Balasore district administration along with Marine Police Force were also evacuating people to cyclone shelters in Chandipur.
Narendra Khamari, BDO Balasore also informed that Arrangements of sanitization & face masks are being done.
Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ is likely to make landfall near Dhamra in Bhadrak district, informed India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General (DG), Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, on Tuesday.
The Cyclonic Storm Yaas has intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and is moving north-northwestwards. It is very likely to intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during the next 12 hours.
