Odisha Assembly Adjourned After Just 4 Minutes on Day 2 of Monsoon Session

The second day of the fourth session of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed minimal proceedings on Friday, lasting only four minutes before being adjourned for the day.

The House assembled briefly in the afternoon but was adjourned until 4 PM following disruptions. Speaker Surama Padhi ordered the adjournment amid uproar, marking one of the shortest working days of the current session.

The uproar began when Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislators raised the issue of fertilizer shortage, accusing the government of failing to ensure timely supply to farmers.

BJD MLAs trooped into the well of the House, shouting slogans and demanding a detailed discussion. Some members even marched towards the Speaker’s podium, forcing the adjournment.

Congress Also Demands Discussion

Sources said Congress MLAs had moved an adjournment motion during Question Hour, seeking a debate on the fertilizer crisis. However, the commotion triggered by the BJD stalled proceedings before any discussion could take place.

Opposition’s Stand

BJD leaders alleged that farmers across Odisha were facing severe difficulties due to shortage of fertilizers and demanded immediate action.

“The farmers are protesting across the state over the fertilizer shortage. While 60 per cent of Odisha’s population depends on farming, the government must address their concerns on priority,” said Pramila Mallik, Opposition Chief Whip.

Government’s Response

The state government has refuted claims of fertilizer shortage, insisting that adequate supply is available. The Minister maintained that there was no disruption in distribution.

BJP Terms It a Political Stunt

The BJP, which currently leads the government, dismissed the protests as a political drama by the BJD.

“Why are they creating a ruckus? They just want public attention and are trying to defame the BJP government,” said a BJP legislator.
