Odisha’s healthcare and medical education landscape is witnessing a significant transformation with the operationalisation of two new government medical colleges and strategic faculty appointments across the state.

The newly established Government Medical College & Hospital in Phulbani, Kandhamal, and Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital in Talcher, Angul, have increased the total number of government medical colleges in Odisha from 12 to 14. This follows the launch of Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital in Jajpur in 2024, marking a steady expansion of medical education infrastructure.

To strengthen medical education and clinical services, the state government has appointed 91 Assistant Professors across 23 broad specialty disciplines and 7 Assistant Professors in 6 super-specialty disciplines at various medical colleges. Key institutions such as SCB Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Cuttack and MKCG MCH in Berhampur have welcomed 15 specialists and 4 super-specialists, and 19 specialists and 3 super-specialists, respectively. Other colleges, including PRM MCH Baripada, SLN MCH Koraput, and the newly established colleges in Phulbani and Talcher, have also received new faculty. Additionally, 38 Professor and 27 Associate Professor positions have been filled through departmental promotions.

The Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC) in Cuttack has also been fortified with 10 super-specialist Assistant Professors in critical departments like Surgical Oncology, Gynaecological Oncology, and Medical Oncology, alongside one Professor and two Associate Professors via promotions. Two postgraduate institutes in the state, including the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, have also been strengthened with new appointments.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to address the growing demand for doctors and specialists in Odisha. With more specialists and super-specialists set to be appointed, the state is poised to enhance its healthcare delivery system, ensuring quality universal healthcare for its citizens. The influx of new medical professionals from these institutions will play a pivotal role in meeting this goal.
