The government extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26 by one day — until September 16, 2025 — after technical glitches disrupted last-day filings on the e-filing portal.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) confirmed that a record 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 15, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore filings. However, many taxpayers reported login issues, payment failures, and trouble downloading their Annual Information Statement (AIS).

“To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025),” CBDT said in a statement on X. The department also announced that the e-filing portal would undergo maintenance from 12 am to 2:30 am on September 16 to address the glitches.

The Income Tax Department had earlier shared troubleshooting steps for browser issues and encouraged users to email details to support teams if problems persisted.

This is the second extension of the deadline this year. The original last date was July 31, but it was first extended to September 15 due to revisions in ITR forms and back-end utilities.

ITR filings have been on a steady rise, reflecting higher tax compliance. For AY 2024-25, 7.28 crore returns were filed by July 31, 2024, compared to 6.77 crore in AY 2023-24 — a growth of over 7.5%.
