The Uttar Pradesh government has placed all seven districts along the Indo–Nepal border on high alert after violent protests gripped Nepal, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.

The protests, led by young demonstrators dubbed the ‘GenZ Movement’, erupted against alleged corruption and a now-revoked social media ban that targeted 26 platforms including WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube.

Security Measures in UP

Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna ordered:

  • 24×7 surveillance and intensified patrolling across Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj

  • Deployment of additional police forces

  • A special control room in Lucknow to assist Indians stranded in Nepal

Three helpline numbers have been made available, including WhatsApp support:

  • 📞 0522-2390257

  • 📞 0522-2724010

  • 📱 9454401674 (WhatsApp enabled)

Authorities clarified that the Indo-Nepal border remains open, but security has been strengthened. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has stepped up patrolling to prevent infiltration of anti-social elements.

Situation in Nepal

Violence escalated in Kathmandu and other cities, with protesters storming and torching government buildings, including:

  • Parliament building

  • President’s office at Shital Niwas

  • Residences of several top leaders

According to local media, at least 19 people have been killed and over 500 injured in police firing and clashes.

President Ram Chandra Paudel appealed for calm, urging demonstrators to seek dialogue instead of destruction.

“In a democracy, the demands raised by citizens can be addressed through dialogue and negotiation,”
— President Paudel, in a statement
