Security agencies in India have ramped up surveillance along the Indo-Nepal border following widespread violent protests in Nepal.
The unrest stems from public outrage over alleged government corruption and the recent ban on 26 unregistered social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Snapchat.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sankalp Sharma confirmed that joint patrolling and strict monitoring are underway in Lakhimpur Kheri district. “We are in constant coordination with the Border Security Force. Adequate police forces have been deployed,” he stated.
Similar measures have been taken in Darjeeling, West Bengal, where the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has intensified checks at the Panitanki border crossing.
The protests in Nepal have turned deadly, with 17 people reportedly killed in Kathmandu and two more in Sunsari district. Demonstrators gathered at Maitighar in Kathmandu, demanding transparency and freedom of expression. The Nepalese government’s use of force—including water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition—has drawn international criticism.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
