A woman identified as Sabitri Gochhayat allegedly attempted self-immolation following a heated family dispute in Manpur village under Kantabania police station limits.
The incident occurred on Saturday and has shocked the local community.
According to reports, Sabitri poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze after a quarrel with family members. She was initially rushed to Angul District Headquarters Hospital, but due to the severity of her injuries—approximately 70% burns—she was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
Kantabania police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the extreme act. Authorities are also looking into the nature of the family dispute and whether any prior incidents of domestic abuse were involved.
The case has sparked conversations around mental health awareness and the need for stronger support systems for women facing domestic challenges.
