India is gearing up to host its first-ever Olympic-distance triathlon under the prestigious IRONMAN banner, with Chennai selected as the venue for the landmark 5150 race.
Scheduled for January 11, 2026, the event will kick off from MGM Beach Resort along East Coast Road (ECR), featuring a 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike ride, and 10 km run.
The announcement was made during a formal gathering in Chennai, where Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin pledged full support for the event. The State Government has sanctioned ₹3 crore to ensure its successful execution, marking India as only the third country in Asia and sixth globally to host this elite format.
An MoU was signed between Deepak Raj, Country Head of IRONMAN India, and J. Meghanatha Reddy, CEO of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, to introduce additional formats including the duathlon series and IRONKIDS races for children aged 6–16.
With over 300 triathletes, 200 duathletes, and a large number of young participants expected, the Chennai chapter is poised to elevate India’s presence in global endurance sports. The IRONMAN brand first debuted in India with a 70.3 race in Goa in 2019, attracting athletes from over 50 nations.
