Brussels: The European Union will allocate emergency funding worth 2.2 million Euros to India for enabling India to fight second coronavirus wave.
A statement issued by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations said the funding will support the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) case management of COVID-19 patients and strengthening the laboratory capacity for COVID-19 testing.
The EU members such as Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden have already mobilised medical supplies such as oxygen equipment, medicines and ventilators to India through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
The support from the EU comes at a time when India has been registering over 4 lakh new cases every day and over 3000 deaths on a daily basis. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had described the ‘aid’ as a mark of ‘friendship’ between nations.
