To curb public harassment and maintain law and order, the Odisha Police has announced a statewide crackdown on illegal ‘puja chanda’ collections during the upcoming festive season.
Following a high-level review meeting at the State Police Headquarters in Cuttack, Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania issued strict directives to all district Superintendents of Police (SPs) to prohibit unauthorised donations often solicited in the name of religious celebrations.
“Every year, we receive complaints about forced donations that disrupt public peace. This year, we are taking a zero-tolerance approach,” said DGP Khurania.
The enforcement plan includes intensified patrolling, surprise checks, and CCTV surveillance in sensitive areas. Police will monitor habitual offenders and coordinate closely with Puja committees and community leaders to ensure compliance.
Cyber cells have also been tasked with round-the-clock monitoring of social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumours.
Special vigilance will be maintained during idol immersion ceremonies, and coordination meetings with local groups will be held to facilitate peaceful festivities.
The Odisha Police has assured citizens that elaborate security arrangements will be in place across the state to safeguard public interest and uphold the spirit of celebration.
