The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has ushered in a new era of railway operations with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Automatic Signalling System on the 83-km Cuttack–Paradeep section of the Talcher–Paradeep Freight Corridor under the Khurda Road Division.

This upgrade, a significant milestone in Indian Railways’ modernisation efforts, enhances safety, efficiency, and connectivity to the strategic Paradeep Port, a key hub for freight and industrial activity in Odisha.

The newly implemented system brings a host of benefits, revolutionising both passenger and freight operations. By reducing headway between trains, the system increases line capacity, allowing more trains to operate in less time. This ensures faster movement and improved punctuality, benefiting commuters and freight operators alike. The automation minimises human dependency, significantly reducing the risk of errors and enhancing safety for all operations. Real-time monitoring and automatic controls further optimise asset utilisation, ensuring reliable and timely services.

The technical advancements are equally impressive. The system features dual multi-section digital axle counters for precise train detection, an integrated power supply for uninterrupted operations, LED signal lamps for clear visibility, dataloggers for comprehensive event monitoring, and video display units at all stations for real-time supervision. Safety has been further bolstered with the interlocking of 19 level crossing gates, eliminating all non-interlocked gates to remove potential hazards. The section has been divided into multiple up and down subsections, enabling smoother traffic handling and increased capacity.

This upgrade is poised to drive economic growth by facilitating faster freight movement to Paradeep Port, a critical node for industrial and trade activities. The enhanced infrastructure strengthens Odisha’s rail connectivity, supporting regional development and industrial progress.

The East Coast Railway’s commitment to safety, modernisation, and world-class infrastructure is evident in this transformative project. The Cuttack–Paradeep section is now equipped to meet the rising demands of passenger and freight traffic, setting a benchmark for railway operations in India.
