In a bid to curb the rising tide of road accidents, Odisha’s Transport Commissioner, Amitabh Thakur, has launched an innovative campaign to integrate road safety awareness into the state’s vibrant festive celebrations.
In a letter addressed to all District Collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Thakur has called for collaboration with Puja Committees to display road safety messages at every Puja Mandap during the upcoming festive season.
The initiative aims to capitalise on the massive gatherings at Durga Puja and other festivals, where devotees flock to worship and celebrate. By embedding road safety messages in these cultural hubs, the campaign seeks to inspire people to prioritise safe travel while seeking divine blessings. “Road accidents are a growing concern, and the festive season offers a unique opportunity to reach a wide audience,” Thakur emphasised in his letter. He urged Puja Committees to use creative means—such as banners, announcements, and cultural programs—to spread awareness about adhering to traffic rules.
Local community leaders, known as ‘Sahi Murabi’, are also being roped in to amplify the campaign’s impact. These respected figures are encouraged to lead efforts in making their localities accident-free, not just during the festivities but year-round. Their influence, particularly among the youth, is seen as a key driver in sustaining the campaign’s momentum. “The words of ‘Sahi Murabi’ carry weight, and their involvement can inspire lasting change,” Thakur noted.
The State Transport Authority has directed all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) to actively participate in the campaign, ensuring that road safety messages reach every corner of Odisha. The initiative is not limited to Durga Puja but will extend to other major festivals, making it a sustained effort to foster a culture of road safety.
District Collectors and SPs have been advised to discuss the campaign during festive coordination meetings with Puja Committees, motivating them to prioritise safety messages alongside traditional celebrations. From posters at Mandaps to announcements during cultural events, the campaign envisions a festive season where devotion and safety go hand in hand.
This collaborative effort marks a significant step in Odisha’s mission to reduce road accidents through community-driven awareness, blending cultural reverence with a commitment to public safety.
