Indian Railways is set to enforce stricter baggage rules, introducing charges for luggage exceeding prescribed limits, similar to airline policies.

Passengers will have different allowances depending on travel class: AC First Class – 70 kg, AC Second Class – 50 kg, AC Third and Sleeper Class – 40 kg, and General Class – 35 kg. An additional 10 kg can be carried for a nominal fee, while baggage beyond that must be booked separately at the luggage counter. Non-compliance will attract fines in addition to booking charges.

To ensure proper enforcement, electronic weighing machines will be installed at key stations, starting with Lucknow and Prayagraj divisions, including stations such as Prayagraj, Banaras, Kanpur, and Lucknow Charbagh.

Railway officials said the phased rollout will be closely monitored before extending the system nationwide, aiming to reduce overcrowding and ensure fair use of space for all passengers.
