A major fire broke out at the biochemistry laboratory of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in the early hours of Sunday, reportedly triggered by a short circuit in an air conditioning unit.
The blaze, which erupted around 2 AM, engulfed the main laboratory located beneath the Diagnostic Centre, causing extensive damage to chemical stocks and testing equipment.
Fire services responded swiftly, containing the flames before they could spread further. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, the incident has severely disrupted routine blood sample testing, affecting patient care and raising questions about the hospital’s fire safety preparedness.
Eyewitnesses and staff allege that malfunctioning AC units have become a recurring hazard. Previous fire incidents at MKCG’s gynaecology ward and super speciality block were also linked to electrical faults. The latest mishap has intensified calls for a comprehensive safety audit and better maintenance protocols.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, and an investigation is underway to assess the extent of the damage and determine accountability.
