Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia met with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss strategies for making India Post profitable.
During the meeting, Scindia and his team from the Department of Posts put forward their capital expenditure requirements, with the goal of transforming the department into a profit-generating entity by 2029, as noted in a press release.
Scindia outlined a new development plan for India Post, emphasizing the department’s initiatives to streamline costs and enhance digital processes. He expressed his vision of turning the department into a logistics company that prioritizes customer satisfaction and profitability.
He highlighted that the ongoing Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) initiative would greatly benefit from investments provided by the Finance Ministry. This BPR initiative will also concentrate on rolling out more appealing business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) services.
Scindia mentioned plans for the Ministry’s investment to focus on the infrastructure enhancement and refurbishment of post offices, as well as the housing facilities for staff across the country. Furthermore, he indicated that the department aims to automate processes to enhance efficiency and readiness for the future.
Having previously standardized the design of post offices in 2007 and provided office equipment to Dak Sewaks, Scindia, shortly after taking charge of the department in 2024, urged his India Post team to explore global best practices and develop innovative strategies.
He expressed confidence in India Post’s ability to expand its market share in the coming 5-7 years, boosting revenue and competing effectively in the industry, particularly in the mail and parcel sectors.
India Post serves as the postal network under the Department of Posts (DoP) in India, which plays a crucial role in the country’s communication and socioeconomic progress. Notable initiatives this year include the introduction of the PMA (Parcel Monitoring Application) for real-time delivery tracking. From May 2019 to October 2024, the volume of accountable mail delivered saw significant growth, increasing from 4.33 lakh articles to 5.35 crore articles, according to official reports.
Additionally, India Post has rolled out e-Clearance of Letter Boxes, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Click N Book services, Nodal Delivery Centres, and Transshipment Centres, and has signed a memorandum of understanding with e-commerce giant Amazon to bolster its logistics operations.
