A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck offshore near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, just days after the region was rattled by a powerful 8.8-magnitude quake that triggered Pacific-wide tsunami alerts.
Seismic monitoring systems reported the tremor at 13:57 local time, about 108 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. Experts said the quake occurred at a moderate depth, helping to reduce surface damage.
The Kamchatka region, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, remains vulnerable to strong aftershocks. Geologists warn that further significant tremors cannot be ruled out.
The back-to-back quakes have raised concerns among analysts and military experts about potential impacts on local infrastructure and strategic facilities in the area.
