Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and co-founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Shibu Soren passed away on Monday (August 4, 2025), his son and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren announced through social media platform X.
Shibu Soren had been admitted to the Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in the national capital for over a month due to a kidney-related issue.
A hospital bulletin said Shibu Soren was declared dead at 8:56 a.m. on Monday (August 4, 2025). Shibu Soren had suffered a stroke one and a half months back and was on a life support system for the last month.
The 81-year-old leader had been the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for the past 38 years and is recognised as the party’s founding patron.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village in the united Bihar, Soren formed the Santhal Navyuvak Sangh, a youth organisation for Santhal tribes when he was 18 years old. Later, he joined hands with Left trade union leader A.K. Roy, and Kurmi-Mahato leader Binod Bihari Mahato to form the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which spearheaded a movement to create a separate Jharkhand state from Bihar.
He was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1980 from Dumka seat. He has served both the Houses of Parliament.
He was the third chief minister of Jharkhand, while his term lasted for just 10 days. He subsequently held the office two more times, but couldn’t complete the tenure.
Soren is survived by two sons and a daughter. His elder son Durga Soren died in 2009, second son, Hemant Soren is the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, and third son Basant Soren is an MLA.
