New Delhi: Eoin Morgan has named Rahul Dravid as a potential candidate for the role of England’s white-ball coach, succeeding Matthew Mott.
Mott resigned after England’s T20 World Cup campaign, where they were unable to retain their title following a disappointing ODI World Cup the previous year. Dravid also stepped down from his role with India, but only after securing the T20 World Cup 2024 victory.
With Dravid not currently tied to any team, Morgan was prompt in considering him for the vacancy. In a conversation with Sky Sports, Morgan emphasized that Rob Key’s responsibility is to enhance the appeal of the England white-ball coach position. He stated that the ECB should then extend offers to the most esteemed coaches.
“It’s the England cricket team, one of the best-funded in the world, so it falls on Rob [Key] to make the role enticing. Then, you approach the world’s top or most respected coaches and present it as a desirable position,” Morgan shared with Sky Sports.
Morgan expressed his intent to reach out to Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming, and Brendon McCullum, praising McCullum, the current coach of England’s Test team, as one of the finest in the world.
“At this point, I would consider Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming, and Brendon McCullum, with McCullum being, in my opinion, among the best coaches globally,” he added.
Dravid, reflecting on his future post-victory, joked, “Next week, I’ll be unemployed. I don’t wish to look too far ahead, but I hope to move on. That’s what life is about.” Presently, Dravid has not committed to any future roles.
