Team India finished strongly at 264/4 on the opening day of the fourth Test of the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy at Old Trafford, but the mood in the camp was tempered by an injury scare to Rishabh Pant, who was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the right foot by a fiery delivery from England pacer Chris Woakes.

Pant, who had looked in fluent touch during his promising 37-run knock, appeared in visible agony as he walked off the field. The blow caused significant swelling, some bleeding, and rendered him unable to stand properly. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed he was taken for scans, leaving fans and teammates anxiously awaiting further medical updates.

Global Cricketing Fraternity Reacts

Pant’s sudden departure drew concern from across the cricketing world:

“It has been India’s day – except for the injury to Pant. That is a big blow… this game needs Pant,”
– said Nasser Hussain, former England captain.

“Pant has been wonderful to watch and commentate on… hopefully it’s just a bruise,”
– added Stuart Broad, recently-retired England pacer.

India’s Innings Highlights

Despite the setback, India ended the day in a strong position, riding on solid contributions from young left-handers:

  • Sai Sudharsan: 72 (Test career-best)

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: 84 (fluent as ever at the top)

  • Ravindra Jadeja (19)* and Shardul Thakur (19)* saw India safely to stumps.

With 83 overs bowled on Day 1, India’s top order looked well in control, but all eyes will now be on Pant’s fitness and his availability for the remainder of the Test.

What’s Next?

The second day’s play could prove crucial as India looks to capitalize on its solid foundation. However, Pant’s return remains uncertain and could heavily impact team balance, especially behind the stumps.
