From Odisha to Ladakh: India’s Missile Systems Prove Unstoppable

India has marked significant milestones in its defence capabilities with the successful test-firing of Prithvi-II and Agni-I short-range ballistic missiles and the high-altitude trial of the advanced Akash Prime missile system. Conducted on July 16 and 17, 2025, these tests underscore India’s growing prowess in indigenous missile technology and its commitment to strengthening national security.

On July 17, the Strategic Forces Command oversaw the successful launches of Prithvi-II and Agni-I from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. Both missiles met all operational and technical parameters, validating their reliability for India’s defence arsenal. These short-range ballistic missiles are critical components of India’s strategic deterrence framework, capable of delivering precise strikes with high accuracy.

A day earlier, on July 16, the Akash Prime missile system, an upgraded variant of the Akash Weapon System, demonstrated its advanced capabilities in Ladakh. The system successfully destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets at an altitude above 4,500 meters, showcasing its effectiveness in high-altitude air defence.

Equipped with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency seeker, Akash Prime incorporates user feedback-driven upgrades, enhancing its operational efficiency. The trial, conducted by the Army Air Defence and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited, marks a significant step toward the timely induction into the Indian Army, bolstering air defence along high-altitude frontiers.

Bolstering India’s Strategic Arsenal

These achievements follow the success of Operation Sindoor, highlighting the robustness of India’s indigenous defence ecosystem. The trials not only reinforce India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing but also position its missile systems as competitive players in the global defence market.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh lauded the Indian Army, DRDO, and industry partners, stating, “These successes are a testament to India’s technological advancements and a significant boost to our air defence capabilities, particularly in high-altitude operations.” DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat echoed this sentiment, congratulating the teams and emphasising that Akash Prime meets critical high-altitude air defence needs.

As India continues to advance its missile development programs, these successful tests signal a robust future for the nation’s defence capabilities, enhancing both strategic deterrence and air defence readiness.
