Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, claiming that Gandhi would “definitely be sent to jail.” Sarma’s remarks came in response to Gandhi’s alleged statement during a closed-door Congress Political Affairs Committee meeting in Assam, where he reportedly said the same about the Chief Minister.

“Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail” — this was Rahul Gandhi’s exact statement, according to Sarma, who reacted sharply on social media. “He came all the way to Assam just to say this, conveniently forgetting that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases registered across the country,” the CM posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Sarma also extended his “best wishes” to Gandhi, sarcastically advising him to enjoy Assam’s hospitality during his day-long visit. Dismissing the Congress leader’s political relevance post-election, Sarma remarked, “He lost, and after that, he kept losing a series of elections. So why should I waste my time on him?”

Gandhi, along with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday in their first visit to the state since Gaurav Gogoi assumed office as Assam Congress president. The leadership was welcomed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport with traditional Assamese gamosas.

The visit comes amid a renewed political war of words ahead of next year’s Assembly elections. Sarma had earlier accused Gandhi of allegedly instigating violence during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and warned of his possible arrest following the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
