Indian badminton legend Saina Nehwal has announced her separation from her husband, fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap.
The announcement marks an emotional chapter in Nehwal’s celebrated career and personal life.
“Life takes us in different directions sometimes,” wrote Nehwal. “After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing – for ourselves and each other.”
The couple, who tied the knot in December 2018 after years of training together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, had long been considered a power duo in Indian badminton. Kashyap, a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, has transitioned into coaching since his retirement in early 2024.
Meanwhile, Nehwal—India’s first Olympic badminton medallist and a former world No. 1—has remained mostly out of the spotlight since her first-round exit at the Singapore Open in 2023. Her recent struggles with arthritis, revealed on the “House of Glory” podcast last year, had already raised speculations about retirement.
Fans and sporting personalities reacted to the news with messages of support, lauding the pair’s courage and commitment to personal well-being. Nehwal’s influence continues to resonate in the badminton world, with her legacy seen as a cornerstone in India’s rise as a global badminton force.
As Nehwal looks ahead to new beginnings, her message underscores a desire to embrace change with dignity and strength.
