Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the inclusion of the ‘Maratha Military Landscapes’ on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List, calling it a proud moment for every Indian.

The inscription marks India’s 44th World Heritage Site, reflecting the enduring legacy and architectural brilliance of the Maratha Empire.

The UNESCO recognition, announced on Friday, honours a network of 12 forts representing the advanced military and fortification system built by the Marathas. Of these, 11 are located in Maharashtra and 1 in Tamil Nadu.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:

“When we speak of the glorious Maratha Empire, we associate it with good governance, military strength, cultural pride and emphasis on social welfare. The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice.”

“Every Indian is elated with this recognition,” he added, urging citizens to visit the forts and immerse themselves in the rich history of the Marathas.

A Cultural Milestone

The Ministry of Culture hailed the listing as a testament to India’s architectural diversity, regional heritage, and historical continuity. The Maratha forts, many of which are perched atop rugged hills or by the sea, showcase ingenious military architecture adapted to various terrains and reflect the strategic brilliance of Maratha rule from the 17th to early 19th century.

Some of the prominent forts likely part of the listing include Raigad, Shivneri, Sinhagad, Rajgad, and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu — known for their historical importance and military innovation.

The UNESCO recognition is expected to boost tourism, conservation efforts, and global awareness of India’s diverse heritage.
