Swapneswar Mahadev Temple ASI Recognition

The ancient Swapneswar Mahadev Temple, located in Punjiama village under Niladriprasad panchayat of Banapur block, has officially been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), cementing its legacy as one of Odisha’s cultural gems.

Dating back to the 6th century during the reign of the Shailodbhava dynasty, the temple is a testament to the region’s architectural grandeur and spiritual heritage. Despite its historical significance, it had long faced neglect. However, proactive efforts during the Modi government’s tenure reignited focus on preserving this monument.

Odisha’s Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their roles in facilitating the ASI’s recognition.

Minister Harichandan also acknowledged the foundational efforts of former Culture Minister Biswabhusan Harichandan, who in 1977–78 had entrusted the state archaeology department with the temple’s care. However, the declaration of the site as a nationally protected monument had remained pending until now.

The formation of a “double engine government” in 2024—both at the centre and State—significantly accelerated heritage preservation efforts, thanks to the collaboration between Union and State leadership. As a result, the Swapneswar temple now enjoys the official backing of ASI for its restoration and protection.

Calling it a “matter of pride for Odia identity and heritage”, Harichandan also thanked Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, former Union Minister Kishan Reddy, and senior BJP leader Samir Mohanty for their support in this historic recognition.
