The Indian Navy responded swiftly to a distress call from the Palau-flagged tanker MT Yi Cheng 6 after a massive fire broke out in its engine room.

The vessel, en route from Kandla, Gujarat, to Shinas, Oman, had 14 Indian-origin crew members onboard and suffered a total power failure at sea.

The Indian Navy deployed its stealth frigate INS Tabar, currently on duty in the Gulf of Oman, to mount a daring rescue operation. According to Navy spokespersons, a firefighting team consisting of 13 Indian naval personnel, supported by the ship’s boat and helicopter, was transferred aboard the stricken vessel.

Five of the tanker’s crew members also joined the efforts to douse the flames. The Navy reported that the blaze, though intense at the outset, was brought under substantial control due to the coordinated actions of the joint firefighting team.

The situation continues to be monitored closely, with the Indian Navy emphasising its commitment to maritime security and humanitarian assistance across international waters.

This incident underscores the Navy’s preparedness and its crucial role in safeguarding Indian lives in global maritime domains.
