The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a fresh bout of heavy rainfall for Odisha as a low-pressure system is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of north Odisha and West Bengal within the next 12 hours.

This development stems from an active upper air cyclonic circulation hovering over the region since Wednesday.

The impending system is expected to trigger widespread showers, particularly over coastal and interior Odisha. IMD has placed several districts under orange and yellow warnings, urging residents and local authorities to prepare for significant downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph.

Rainfall Advisory by Day:

  • Day 1 (June 26–27):
    • Orange Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
    • Yellow Warning: Districts like Bargarh, Deogarh, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, and Jajpur may witness isolated heavy showers accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
  • Day 2 (June 27–28):
    • Yellow Warning: Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kalahandi, among others, may receive heavy rainfall.
  • Day 3 (June 28–29):
    • Yellow Warning: Districts like Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Bargarh will likely continue to experience heavy rain.

The IMD has advised fishermen and residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and avoid venturing into rough seas. Local administrations have also been urged to stay on high alert to mitigate potential flooding and infrastructural damage.

As the monsoon system strengthens, Odisha could be in for a wet weekend ahead.
