The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the second day of its driver awareness program focused on road safety.

This program builds on the momentum from the first day, during which 200 drivers received training and awareness about safe driving practices.

Launched as part of the Zero Accident Day initiative by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on June 3, the program aims to educate drivers on the importance of road safety and promote responsible driving behaviors.

Retired IAS officer Gangadhar Sahoo, Principal Project Officer at the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety, IIT Madras, contributed his expertise and insights, highlighting the need for a mindset that places safety first. Additional Commissioner of BMC, Kailash Chandra Das, along with senior officials, attended the program, emphasising the corporation’s commitment to enhancing road safety.

The second day of the initiative continued to see enthusiasm from the drivers, who actively engaged in the sessions and learned about adopting safe driving practices. Sharmistha Panigrahi from the Centre of Excellence for Road Safety, IIT Madras, conducted technical sessions that provided drivers with practical knowledge relevant to safe driving.

The driver awareness program is scheduled to continue until June 21, with more drivers expected to benefit from the training and awareness sessions. The BMC is dedicated to promoting road safety and reducing accidents in the city, aiming to foster a culture of safety on the roads in Bhubaneswar.

As Gangadhar Sahoo remarked, “Road safety is not just about following rules; it’s about adopting a mindset that prioritizes safety.” This initiative is anticipated to significantly impact the reduction of road accidents in Bhubaneswar.
