Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a blunt response when asked about Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from the upcoming Test series against England, saying, “Mai selector nahi hoon” (I am not a selector).
His comment redirected attention to the selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, which has faced scrutiny over Iyer’s omission.
Agarkar defended the decision, stating that while Iyer had performed well in ODIs and domestic cricket, there was “no room in Test cricket right now.” Iyer had recently scored 181 runs in the ODI series against England at an average of 60.33, including a pivotal 59-run knock.
The debate comes as Indian cricket undergoes a generational shift, with Shubman Gill named Test captain and Rishabh Pant appointed vice-captain. The selection choices indicate a focus on nurturing emerging talent, but have also sparked discussion on balancing experience with youth.
Meanwhile, Iyer is set to lead Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scheduled for May 29 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium, Mullanpur. Speaking ahead of the clash, Iyer expressed confidence in his squad’s mindset and their ambition to “win the championship, not just make playoffs.”
