Eminent nuclear physicist and former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. M R Srinivasan, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 95.
His family confirmed the news, expressing deep sorrow over his demise.
Dr. Srinivasan, a key figure in India’s indigenous nuclear energy program, began his illustrious career with the Department of Atomic Energy in 1955. He worked alongside the renowned Dr. Homi Bhabha on India’s first nuclear research reactor, Apsara, which achieved criticality a year later.
Over the years, he held several pivotal roles, including Chief Project Engineer of the Madras Atomic Power Station and Director of the Power Projects Engineering Division. His tenure as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy saw the development of 18 nuclear power units, cementing India’s position as a nuclear energy leader.
In recognition of his monumental contributions, Dr. Srinivasan was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences, acknowledging Srinivasan’s instrumental role in advancing the nation’s scientific progress.
