In a significant administrative decision, the Odisha government has officially set up a dedicated National Investigation Agency (NIA) police station in Bhubaneswar.
This move is aimed at enhancing the state’s ability to investigate and coordinate terror-related cases and other offences of national importance under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008.
The notification, issued by the Home Department under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, designates the office of the Superintendent of Police in charge of the NIA Police Station as a full-fledged police station.
The newly established NIA Police Station in Bhubaneswar, located at the Regional Telecom Training Centre (BSNL), Vani Vihar, VSS Nagar, will oversee investigations across the entire state of Odisha.
According to official statements, the establishment of this police station is expected to streamline case handling procedures, ensure faster response times, and improve coordination between the Odisha government and central investigative agencies. Authorities believe that this will play a crucial role in addressing national security challenges more efficiently.
The notification states, “In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (46 of 2023), the State Government hereby declares the office specified in Column (1) of the Schedule below as a Police Station for the area specified in Column (2) thereof, in respect of the investigation of scheduled offences under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 (34 of 2008), for exercising the powers under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (46 of 2023).”
Security experts and analysts welcome this move, stating that the establishment of an NIA police station in Bhubaneswar within the state will contribute to more effective investigation processes and improved safety measures.
As Odisha continues to strengthen its infrastructure for law enforcement and national security, this new addition reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
