Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening the steel industry by ensuring the availability of raw materials and necessary infrastructure.

During a high-level meeting with representatives of the Indian Steel Association (ISA), led by industrialist Naveen Jindal, Majhi assured that Odisha would provide all required support under existing regulations, following appropriate discussions with stakeholders.

The meeting focused on increasing India’s steel production capacity from the current 165 million tonnes per annum to 500 million tonnes by 2047. Majhi emphasised Odisha’s strategic role in achieving this ambitious target, highlighting the state’s vast mineral resources and proactive industrial policies.

Key Discussions & Industry Support

Raw Material Supply & Infrastructure Expansion

  • The auction of additional iron ore mines was discussed, with officials revealing that around 30 mines are expected to be auctioned this year.
  • The early operationalisation of already auctioned mines was emphasised to ensure a steady supply of raw materials.
  • The possibility of supplying iron ore to steel companies at competitive rates through the state-owned Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) was explored.

Boosting Steel Production & Industry Collaboration

  • Majhi assured steel companies that Odisha would facilitate seamless access to iron ore and other essential resources.
  • The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting infrastructure development to enhance steel production capacity.
  • ISA representatives, including Naveen Jindal, praised Odisha’s contribution to India’s steel sector, noting that the state plays a crucial role in making India the second-largest steel producer globally.

Majhi highlighted Odisha’s long-term vision, stating that by 2036, the state aims to become a major industrial hub, contributing significantly to India’s economic growth. The government is focused on creating a business-friendly environment, ensuring that steel companies receive the necessary support to expand operations and enhance production.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary of the Steel and Mines Department Surendra Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries Department Hemant Sharma, and secretaries from other relevant departments.

With Odisha’s proactive approach to industrial expansion, the state is set to play a pivotal role in India’s steel industry growth, ensuring sustainable development and economic progress.
