Launched in August 2020, the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) continues to make significant strides in combating drug addiction across India.

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the program integrates prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation into a three-pronged strategy to curb substance abuse.

The campaign has already sensitised over 15.58 crore people, including 5.20 crore youth and 3.30 crore women, through grassroots outreach initiatives. A national toll-free helpline (14446), along with a mobile app and website, enhances accessibility to rehabilitation and counselling services.

According to the 2018 National Survey on Substance Use, 16 crore individuals consume alcohol, while 3.1 crore use cannabis and 2.26 crore opioids. Shockingly, over 8.5 lakh people inject drugs intravenously, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Delhi. Recognising the urgency, NMBA operates more than 730 free de-addiction centres and supports over 10,000 trained volunteers.

Backed by Article 47 of the Indian Constitution, NMBA aligns with the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) to enforce stricter policies and enhance rehabilitation efforts. The initiative remains committed to building a disciplined, healthy, and drug-free India.
