A stampede at the revered Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village of Goa turned tragic in the early hours of Saturday, claiming the lives of six devotees and leaving more than 15 others injured, according to officials. The incident occurred during the annual Lairai Zatra, a major religious festival that draws thousands from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

North Goa Superintendent of Police Akshat Kaushal confirmed the casualties, while State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane reported that 30 people were injured, with eight in critical condition. Two of the most seriously injured have been referred to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim for advanced treatment.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families,” he said in a post on X. “Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with me and took detailed stock of the situation, offering full support during this difficult time.”

The exact cause of the stampede is under investigation, but early reports suggest the large crowd and pre-dawn rush during the fire-walking ritual may have contributed to the chaos.

The Lairai Zatra is famous for its dramatic and sacred fire-walking ritual, which begins after midnight. Devotees gather to perform a rhythmic stick dance inside the temple, followed by a bonfire ritual. As the fire burns down, barefoot worshippers run across the hot embers chanting the name of Goddess Lairai—a symbolic act of devotion and endurance.

This year’s festival ended in tragedy, casting a shadow over what is typically a vibrant spiritual celebration. Local authorities are expected to review safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
