In a heartfelt address at the Ageing with Dignity event at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre today, President Droupadi Murmu underscored the significance of valuing and supporting senior citizens.

Organised by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the event saw the launch of several welfare initiatives, including a senior citizens’ welfare portal, the virtual inauguration of senior citizens’ homes, and the distribution of aids and assistive devices. Additionally, a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Brahmakumaris organisation.

Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu reaffirmed that respecting and caring for elders is deeply embedded in India’s culture. She emphasised that senior citizens not only serve as a vital emotional pillar in families but also provide invaluable wisdom and experience to younger generations. “Elders are a link to the past and also guides to the future. We should cherish their guidance and enjoy their valuable company,” she stated.

Amid the fast-paced modern world, the President highlighted the need for spiritual empowerment among seniors, urging them to reflect on their lives and lead a meaningful journey. She commended the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure senior citizens remain active participants in society, expressing hope that such initiatives will continue to uplift and support the elderly population.

Calling for collective responsibility, President Murmu encouraged citizens to commit themselves to the happiness and well-being of the elderly, emphasising that a society that respects its elders will prosper in values and wisdom.
