The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical weather advisory for Odisha, warning of intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall from April 30 to May 3.
The weather activity stems from a trough in the westerlies, significantly impacting the atmospheric conditions over the region. Temperatures have fluctuated drastically, with North Odisha experiencing an appreciable rise (2–4°C), while other areas saw a sharp fall in temperatures by the same margin.
Several districts, including Koraput, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Mayurbhanj, are under an orange alert. Residents have been urged to remain cautious as the weather conditions could lead to damage to crops, banana trees, and unsecured structures. Safety measures such as staying indoors, avoiding travel, and unplugging appliances are strongly recommended.
The IMD has also reported significant rainfall in various districts, with Mohakalapada (Kendrapara) recording the highest at 10 cm. Citizens are advised to follow updates from the authorities and take proactive steps to mitigate risks.
