New Delhi: Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on January 30. The day marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi, The Father of the Nation and the most renowned name in the history of India’s freedom struggle was assassinated by Nathuram Godse in the Birla House on January 30, 1948.
Every year on Martyrs’ Day, the Prime Minister, President, Vice-President, Defense Minister and the three Service Chiefs pay their tribute to the father of the nation by showering his Samadhi at Raj Ghat with flowers.
A two-minute silence is observed nationwide at 11 AM to remember the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country. There is also a tradition of holding all-religion prayers and singing tributes for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
Martyrs’ Day is also observed on 23rd March every year as on this day Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar sacrificed their lives for India’s Independence.
