The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has obtained an Indian patent for a biodegradable packaging material derived from flower waste.

This innovation, titled “Multipurpose Biodegradable Packaging Material Prepared from Flower Waste,” signifies a significant advancement in tackling the twin challenges of plastic pollution and organic waste accumulation.

This pioneering material decomposes by over 95% within 50 days without leaving harmful residues or microplastics. With its applications spanning industries like agriculture, food packaging, and logistics, the eco-friendly packaging is set to replace conventional plastic solutions. The scalability, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to global biodegradable standards position this invention as a game-changer in sustainable packaging.

The research team, led by retired Professor R.K. Patel, included Mr. Souvik Mandal, Mr. Sudipta Pahari, and Dr. Abhijit Behera. Their innovative approach of repurposing floral waste for packaging offers environmental solutions while creating social and economic benefits. By promoting localised waste management networks and resource utilisation, this invention is poised to empower rural communities and generate new livelihood opportunities.

The patented technology also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing NIT Rourkela’s commitment to impactful, interdisciplinary research.
