The iconic Ratna Bhandar of the Jagannath Temple in Puri is undergoing a historic transformation, with renovation work expected to conclude within the next month.

This was confirmed by Justice Biswanath Rath, head of the Ratna Bhandar Inspection Committee.

Strengthening a Sacred Legacy
Justice Rath stated that while the inner chamber’s renovation is nearly complete, ongoing work continues on the outer chamber. The restoration aims to preserve the structure for the next century, with five damaged beams already replaced by reinforced steel supports.

“Our focus is on long-term structural integrity. With proper materials and methods being used by ASI experts, the Ratna Bhandar is being secured for at least 100 years,” said Justice Rath.

Ornaments to Be Relocated with SOP Protocols
Once the structural work wraps up, attention will turn to the relocation of the temple’s priceless ornaments and jewels, following a strict Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

“We will begin moving the treasures after repairs are finished, ensuring complete security and accountability,” Justice Rath added.

A Race Against Time, Guided by Devotion
The inner sanctum’s walls were reported to be in poor condition, but timely intervention has ensured the preservation of centuries-old heritage. Repair activities are conducted for three to four hours daily, using traditional techniques and materials under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

“With the Lord’s grace, the work has gone smoothly. Once repairs are done, the counting and restoration of the ornaments will follow,” Justice Rath noted.

This renovation project not only marks a major milestone in temple preservation but also serves as a crucial step toward safeguarding the spiritual and cultural wealth of Odisha.
