The 2025 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has reached its quarter-final stage, promising a blockbuster day of tennis at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.

With a prize pool of €2,889,200 on the line, the ATP 500 event on clay has brought together some of the biggest names in men’s tennis, setting the stage for intense battles under the Mediterranean sun. The matchups, announced by the ATP Tour on X at 16:55 UTC, have fans buzzing with anticipation.

The quarter-final draw features top seed Carlos Alcaraz facing off against Alex de Minaur in a highly anticipated clash. Alcaraz, a two-time champion at this event, has been in scintillating form, but de Minaur’s speed and tenacity could pose a challenge on the clay courts of Pedralbes. The Spaniard, cheered on by a passionate home crowd, will look to leverage his powerful baseline game to advance to the semi-finals.

Another marquee matchup pits defending champion Casper Ruud against the fiery Holger Rune. Ruud, the second seed, has a strong clay-court pedigree, but Rune’s aggressive play style and recent improvements make this a must-watch encounter. Fans on X, including user Cyrus Biwott, have already dubbed this matchup “fire,” reflecting the excitement surrounding the Nordic showdown.

Elsewhere, third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, a four-time finalist in Barcelona, takes on the talented Arthur Fils. Tsitsipas, who opened his campaign against Reilly Opelka, has a favourable head-to-head record against Fils but will need to be at his best to counter the Frenchman’s dynamic shot-making. The final quarter-final sees Karen Khachanov squaring off against Davidovich Fokina, a matchup that promises gritty rallies and intense competition.

The Barcelona Open, a tournament with a rich history dating back to 1953, has long been a cornerstone of the clay court season. Originally founded by Carlos Godó Valls, 2nd Count of Godó, the event has evolved into a key ATP 500 series stop, previously part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit (1970–1989). This year’s edition, however, is missing world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who is serving a doping ban until May 4, adding an extra layer of unpredictability to the draw.

With temperatures in Barcelona averaging 19°C (66°F) this week, conditions are ideal for high-quality tennis. The reduced 32-player draw has intensified the competition, ensuring every match is a battle. Fans can catch the action live on the Sony LIV app and website in India, while those in attendance at the Pista Rafa Nadal—the centre court named after the 12-time champion Rafael Nadal—can expect an electric atmosphere.

The winner of this year’s Barcelona Open will not only claim a significant share of the €2.8 million prize pool but also gain crucial momentum heading into the French Open.

As the quarter-finals unfold, all eyes will be on Alcaraz, Ruud, and Tsitsipas to see if they can maintain their momentum on the road to the title.
