Seven adult gharials were released into the Mahanadi River gorge at Odisha’s Satkosia on Wednesday.
This effort, led by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Prem Kumar Jha, aims to revive the dwindling population of the endangered species.
The newly released reptiles include five females and two males, sourced from Nandankanan Zoological Park and the Tikarpada Gharial Research and Conservation Unit. Authorities are utilising radio collars to track their adaptation, ensuring their survival in natural habitats.
The gharial recovery program has seen previous releases between 2019 and 2022, with recent surveys showing a promising population increase. Conservationists continue to stress the importance of scientific monitoring, habitat protection, and local awareness to sustain this positive trend.
