Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi found himself at the center of controversy after asking engineering students at a college event in Madurai to chant “Jai Shri Ram” to honor the ancient poet behind the Kamba Ramayanam.
While students responded to his appeal, the ruling DMK and Congress parties sharply criticized Ravi’s remarks.
DMK spokesperson Dharanidharan accused the Governor of undermining India’s secular values and acting as a “spokesperson for RSS,” calling his actions unconstitutional. Congress MLA Aassan Maulana alleged that Ravi’s behavior resembled that of a religious leader promoting inequality and religious ideology.
Adding to the tension is the Supreme Court’s recent censure of the Governor for delaying clearance of ten state Assembly bills, further straining relations between Ravi and Tamil Nadu’s DMK-led government.
Governor RN Ravi’s comments have once again put his role in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape under scrutiny, raising questions about the boundaries between constitutional duties and personal beliefs.
