A family dispute in Badaakhapalli village, Ganjam district, led to the brutal murder of 27-year-old Shambhunath Rout (alias Papun) by his elder brother Kailash.
Shambhunath, who had recently returned from jail after being acquitted of charges due to lack of evidence, was killed on Friday evening. The younger brother had previously been imprisoned for raping their mother, who later committed suicide.
Following the murder, Kailash surrendered at Kodala police station. The police have sent Shambhunath’s body for post-mortem examination and registered a case (215/2025).
Local residents revealed that Shambhunath’s past actions had caused unrest within the family, ultimately leading to the fatal confrontation. Kodala police are continuing their investigation, according to officer Subash Chandra Behera.
