A special enforcement team has launched an extensive investigation into illegal coal mining operations in the Telendihi region of Sundargarh district.

Under the directive of the Directorate of Mines and Geology, the team conducted raids in multiple locations, uncovering unauthorized coal mines operating within protected forest areas, including Telendihi, Ratanasara, Jamkani, and Bhogra Kachhar.

This specially formed squad comprises nine members, including three deputy mining directors—Pabitra Kumar Sahu, Biswaranjan Sethi, and Santosh Kumar Sahu—junior mining officer Basudeb Tudu, and four police officers. Additional support came from Hemgiri Tehsildar Sarika Rani Dhamel, an RI, and a Range Officer from the Forest Department. The operation aims to combat the large-scale illegal mining activities that have posed ecological and administrative challenges.

Preliminary investigations revealed that hundreds of small and large unauthorized mines were exploiting resources in the forested areas, raising alarms about sustainability and governance. This coordinated effort by the government highlights their commitment to preserving natural resources and curbing illegal activities. Further investigations are ongoing to bring those involved to justice.
