Tragedy has struck the Nandankanan Zoological Park following the death of a rare male Scarlet Macaw while undergoing veterinary care.
The vibrant bird had recently stopped taking food and was observed sitting isolated in a corner of its enclosure. Recognising the signs of severe distress, zoo officials immediately shifted the macaw to the isolation ward of the veterinary care centre for intensive monitoring and treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the bird succumbed to its illness.
The deceased parrot was part of a group of four Scarlet Macaws—consisting of two males and two females—that had arrived at Nandankanan on September 12 from the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, an initiative under Anant Ambani’s Vantara project. The addition of these exotic birds had been a major attraction for visitors and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
With the loss of this male macaw, only three of the recently acquired Scarlet Macaws now remain at the park. Zoo authorities are closely monitoring the surviving birds to ensure their health and well-being. An official investigation into the exact cause of the bird’s death is expected following standard post-mortem procedures.
