A state-wide warning for heavy rainfall and squally winds has been issued across Odisha following the impact of Cyclone Murasu.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is forecasted for the next two days, with southern Odisha expected to bear the main brunt of the storm.
Cyclone Murasu is projected to complete its landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast by Tuesday morning. While the primary landfall lies in the neighboring state, its peripheral system will trigger significant weather activity across Odisha over the next 48 hours.
District-Wise Warnings & Wind Alerts
A Yellow Warning for heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for the southern districts of Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
Additionally, gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h accompanied by rain are expected in:
- Southern & Coastal Districts: Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh.
Thunderstorms with lightning and rain are also expected in several northern and coastal districts under a Yellow Warning:
- Coastal & Northern Districts: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Weather Outlook & Temperature Forecast
Continuous downpours are expected on November 3 and 4, after which the cyclonic system will weaken by November 5 as it moves away from the Odisha-Andhra border. Rainfall activity will reduce to scattered showers across the state thereafter.
Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, noted that daytime temperatures will remain mostly stable over the next four days, with current average maximum temperatures around 29°C and minimum temperatures around 23°C. However, night temperatures are expected to drop by up to 3°C below normal starting November 5 as dry weather settles in.
Impact and State Preparedness
Rainfall has already been recorded over the past 24 hours across coastal and southern towns, including Balasore, Chandbali, Kataka, Paradip, Bhubaneswar, Gopalpur, Puri, and Baripada.
Authorities have expressed concern over river embankments, canals, and anicuts previously weakened by flooding from Cyclone Arnab, as the fresh spells of rain could exert additional hydraulic pressure. In response, the state government has accelerated evacuation procedures in vulnerable low-lying areas to ensure public safety.
